"The soldier is the Army. No army is better than its soldiers.
The soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship that of bearing arms for one's country. Hence, it is a proud privilege to be a soldier-a good soldier. Anyone, in any walk of life who is content with mediocrity is untrue to himself and to American tradition. To be a good soldier a man must have disciPLIne, self-respect, pride in his unit and in his country, a high sense of duty and obligation to his comrades and to his superiors, and self confidence, borne of demonstrated ability."
General George S. Patton Jr.

Inspection

When operating as a battalion, the PLI will have safety inspection and formations. All men should be familiar with the following formation for inspection of the battalion. It differs slightly from the US Army Battalion Inspection formation, but is basically the same. Specific orders and commands for the inspection will be published in a special order prior to the inspection.
Prior military personnel will notice that this is a simPLIfied formation. This was done specifically and not by accident. The PLI must have the capability to hold formal assemblies, but to waste valuable training time with the maneuvers would not be wise. As such we have kept this system as simple as possible.

Inspections will generally be a time to muster the unit, meet fellow members, check safety equipment, and review PLI policies and procedures. It should not be dreaded, but anticipated by the members as a show of the Battalions strength, competence, and purpose to fellow paintballers. It is also to show other players what they are missing. While intended to be fun, members should endeavor to act appropriately.

"When a unit has been alerted for inspection do not fail to inspect it and inspect it thoroughly."
General George S. Patton Jr.
Camp

When in camp at an event, the PLI will camp in formation to facilitate ease of command, communications, and to give individual members the opportunity to meet and get to know each other. The camp setup used here is from the US Army Regulation, 1861 and is the same camp as used by the forces of North and South during the American Civil War. This camp is NOT intended to be part of the playing field. In the event the PLI participates in a campaign type event, the camp formation (if any) would be designated by the Event Special Order.

This camp formation has been adopted due to the ease of which PLI units can locate one another. Local teams are encouraged to display their banners on guidon (flag) poles at the head of each company street.

Chain of Command (Field Operations)

Chain of command in field operations shall be determined by rotation of the units as defined in the By Laws (see FM 1-2 Bylaws and General Orders). Though the PLI is presented with a battalion format, command rank will be limited by that which is appropriate for the number of men fielded

Unit: Minimum Unit Size: Maximum Unit Size: Rank Holders Allotted: Total Maximum Unit Size (w/Rankholders):
Squad 5 Men 5 Men 1 Sergeant 5 Men
1 Corporal
Platoon 15 Men 20 Men 1 2nd Lieutenant 22 Men

1 Sergeant Major
1 Captain per company
1 1st Lieutenant per company
1 1st Sergeant per company
1 2nd Lieutenant per platoon
1 Staff Sergeant per platoon
1 Sergeant per squad
1 Corporal per squad

Rank holders listed assume a maximum unit size. Smaller unit sizes will result in less rank holders based on the Battalion Staff Allocation Chart in FM 1-2.

The unit matrix will be used for each event in which the PLI participates. Units will enter the matrix based on the order of rotation for the unit and the number of men pre-registered to attend a PLI event. The overall event commander will be based on the rotation of the Captain’s council and will not be part of the event matrix. In the event the unit commander’s rank is higher than captain, staff positions shall be filled based on the command rotation for event commanders. Specific commanders will be chosen by the individual units, not PLI Organizational Staff. Matrix assignments will be to the units and will not assume to name the leader a specific unit wishes to appoint for the event. The number of troops attending the event will determine the rank of the event commander. If fifteen men attend and event, the event commander is a Lieutenant. If four hundred men attend, the event commander is a full Colonel.
Company sizes will be kept as close to the same as possible.

Chain of Command (Organizational)

Each team of at least five members which officially joins the PLI shall receive a seat on the Battalion Council. The member may be selected by any method from the team to whom the seat is allocated. These members will represent their teams for PLI meetings and shall exercise their team’s votes. Members of the Battalion council may hold any rank at unit events and do not give up any of the rights of membership.
Units shall be listed in order of joining. The Executive Coordinator will be appointed descendingly based on this list. Terms to run from January 1 to June 30 and from July 1 to December 31. The Executive Coordinator (EC) is responsible for all unit communications and decisions during their term. The EC may appoint staff members from the Battalion Council to assist in unit planning. Event planning is the responsibility of the Event commander and staff. The EC may assist in this planning, but holds the primary responsibility of representing the Battalion. The EC serves as the Chairperson at all Battalion Council meetings and holds no vote and cannot serve as the Event Commander during his term of office. The team from which the EC is appointed may designate another team member to serve as their Battalion Council Representative. This is intended to keep the EC from facing conflict of interest problems when running the unit.
The duties and responsibilities of the Battalion Council and Executive Coordinator are explained more fully in the By Laws in Appendix A.

"He who wishes to be obeyed must know how to command."
